Dubai Loop to span 24km, serve 13,000 passengers daily

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), announced during the World Government Summit the signing of a Dhs2.5 billion contract with The Boring Company to implement the Dubai Loop project. The initiative will be the second of its kind globally, after California, to introduce this innovative underground transportation system.

The project will extend across a 24-kilometre network, with the first phase set to begin at an estimated cost of Dhs600 million, covering approximately six kilometres. The technology used by the American company relies on advanced drilling methods that differ from traditional tunnelling techniques, significantly reducing construction costs.

According to Al Tayer, the cost per kilometre using this technology is approximately Dhs70 million, compared to Dhs125 million for conventional road construction. The system’s design is based on gradual drilling and straight-track alignment, simplifying implementation and reducing technical challenges.

Al Tayer explained that the project supports the “first and last mile” concept in urban transport, enabling seamless connections between passengers and key transport hubs across the city. He noted that the network is expected to serve around 13,000 passengers daily, particularly in Dubai’s financial and commercial districts, improving transport efficiency and easing traffic congestion.

He added that the Dubai Loop is among the first projects of its kind in the region, representing a significant advancement in infrastructure and reinforcing Dubai’s ability to adopt innovative, smart, and sustainable transportation solutions.

Implementation Period

Al Tayer stated that the entire project is expected to be completed within approximately two years, beginning with the first phase, which will commence immediately after the contract is finalised. The initial stage aims to enhance mobility in strategic areas and strengthen connectivity between different modes of transport across Dubai.
