The Pritzker-winning Japanese architect will create the city-state's first official art museum.

  • Dubai has unveiled plans for the Dubai Museum of Art, designed by Pritzker laureate Tadao Ando.
  • Rising from Dubai Creek, Ando’s circular, light-filled design evokes the city’s maritime heritage and symbolizes harmony between sea and sky.
  • Developed by Al-Futtaim Group with royal backing, the museum will host Modern and contemporary art, joining Dubai’s expanding network of cultural landmarks.

The booming city-state of Dubai has announced plans for its first official art museum, designed by Tadao Ando.

The Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect unveiled renderings of a five-story building on Dubai Creek, an inlet off the Persian Gulf. The Al-Futtaim Group conglomerate is developing the project with the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, which is a member state of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai Museum of Art (DUMA) will further the ruler’s efforts to transform Dubai, studded with numerous skyscrapers, into a global cultural hub. No opening date has been specified.

“Culture and art are the soul of a city and a lens through which its progress is seen,” said Sheikh Al Maktoum in a statement. “They reflect its vision and the depth of its humanitarian mission. The Dubai Museum of Art will be a new beacon for the city, enhancing its arts scene and further strengthening its global cultural status.”
